New Forest West
The Labour Women’s coastal group in New Forest West has decorated a stunning Christmas tree with a powerful message: Everyone deserves a front door, with or without roses. The tree is part of the annual Christmas Tree Festival at St Thomas Church in Lymington.
The tree features handmade decorations by the members of the group, such as miniature houses, doors, tents, and roses. The group said that their theme highlights the lack of appropriate housing both nationally and locally for families and individuals, whether they are young, old, or in between. They also said that their group focuses on issues affecting women in their community and beyond, such as domestic violence, poverty, and health.
The proceeds from the sale of the tree will go to the housing charity Crisis, which helps homeless people and campaigns for social change. The group hopes their tree will raise awareness and funds for the urgent issue of homelessness, especially during the winter season.
Bronwen Bridges, who organises the group, said: “This has been something which was great teamwork, the whole group contributed in some way. We have enjoyed working together to put across a very serious message using our creative skills. It’s good to be part of a group which works co-operatively, campaigns for justice, and makes delicious cake!”
A recent report by Crisis showed that, between April and June 2023, the number of households living in temporary accommodation rose by 10.5% compared to the same quarter last year, to 105,750 – this includes nearly 140,000 children. Last year, New Forest District Council announced that there had been a 20 per cent rise in New Forest households facing homelessness, with 40 families in the area set to wake up homeless on Christmas Day.
The Labour Women’s group focuses on issues affecting women in the community and beyond. They invite everyone to join their group and get involved in their activities. They have two groups in New Forest West, one covering Ringwood and Fordingbridge and the Coastal group, covering New Milton, Lymington, Hordle and the surrounding areas.
